The Heist

On a regular Monday in June 1889, Butch Cassidy rode into Telluride on horseback with his band of outlaws disguised as cowboys. The historic bank robbery they pulled off that afternoon would forever be known as Cassidy’s first big heist. A lesser-known part of the tale revolves around the gang’s successful escape. As the newly minted bank robbers slipped away from the scene, they were closely trailed by local lawmen. But the authorities didn’t know about the other team of horses waiting for Cassidy at Double Cabin. Mounted on animals not exhausted by the grueling getaway, the outlaws left the unexpecting deputies in the dust, attributing Cassidy’s Fresh Horses with legendary infamy.
