In Heart Of Winter, Telluride Resort Urges Travelers To ‘Think Summer'

Just as people settle in for the coldest months of winter, facing long days and low temps, the folks at Telluride's premiere ski-in/ski-out resort remind travelers that now is the time to plan summer vacations.

Telluride, located deep in the San Juan Mountains of southwestern Colorado, is in the midst of their ski season. When this year's snows melt, "the world-class ski slopes of Telluride will turn verdant green," says Neil Hastings, director of sales and marketing for Mountain Lodge at Telluride. "That sets the stage for superb hiking, biking, horseback riding, wildflower viewing and every other outdoor activity."

In Heart Of Winter, Telluride Resort Urges Travelers To ‘Think Summer'

Telluride, located deep in the San Juan Mountains of southwestern Colorado, is in the midst of their ski season. When this year's snows melt, "the world-class ski slopes of Telluride will turn verdant green," says Neil Hastings, director of sales and marketing for Mountain Lodge at Telluride. "That sets the stage for superb hiking, biking, horseback riding, wildflower viewing and every other outdoor activity."

Deriving as much value as possible from travel is more important than ever in today’s economic climate. Beyond searching for prices, packages and promotions, knowing how to make the best use of a hotel’s concierge services may be one of the best-kept secrets around when it comes to getting the most from your next vacation.

Mountain Lodge At Telluride Offer 5 Tips On Making The Best Use Of Concierge Services

Concierge services, once reserved for wealthy and demanding guests, are open to every hotel guest at the Mountain Lodge at Telluride. A good concierge has his or her finger on the pulse of the community and have access to one of the most crucial parts of any vacation: inside information.

The Mountain Lodge offers these tips to making the best use of concierge services.

Start Before Your Trip
Call the concierge in advance of your arrival to start planning. Many concierges will be happy to work with you to arrange any services you need, make reservations or help plan out activities and an agenda for your stay. Mountain Lodge at Telluride even has a virtual concierge service where guests can log on and specify their interests and requests before arrival. Working with the concierge before you leave home can be especially helpful when visiting areas that tend to get booked (think ski resorts or popular beach destinations).

Make An Activity Plan
A concierge's responsibilities have expanded significantly over the past 20-30 years, says Treacy, and extend far beyond making dinner reservations. Don't be afraid to ask a concierge to help you plan your vacation in detail, day by day. If you're headed on a ski trip, the concierge can suggest activities and places to visit that are in line with your tastes for those days you may not want to ski all day. If you're planning a family vacation, the concierge can map out a plan that holds interest for each member of your family.

Create An Experience
A good concierge can suggest not only a good restaurant, but where to sit and what time to arrive at a local eatery to catch the perfect sunset.

Communicate
Don't be shy. The more you ask the concierge and the more information you can share about your needs and desires, the more effective the service will be. Communicating your needs can create the smooth vacation you hope to have.

Solve A Problem
Good concierges can solve virtually any problem, and handle seemingly impossible tasks with speed. Whether it's a need for an interpreter, interest in finding a hiking trail with just the right degree in difficulty, resolving a snag in travel plans, or help on finding almost anything, speak up.

When it comes to vacationing in Telluride, man’s best friend receive the same type of welcome and first-class treatment as his or her owners do at Mountain Lodge at Telluride.

Upscale Resort Rolls Out Red Carpet For Man’s Best Friend In Pet-Friendly Telluride

Pets are welcome at the upscale resort, as they are at most stops in the Telluride area. Boasting more dogs than people, Telluride is one of the most dog-friendly vacation destinations in the country. Pet owners especially enjoy bringing their dogs to Telluride in summer and fall, when they can access the hundreds of miles of hiking and biking trails – all of which are dog-friendly – that extend directly from the Town of Telluride. All are dog-friendly.

Pets are allowed in select cabins of the free, energy efficient gondola that connects Telluride and the neighboring town of Mountain Village, ensuring man’s best friends can also enjoy the 360-degree views. The town’s free shuttle bus system, the Galloping Goose, helps tired paws by welcoming well-behaved pets on a leash.

Designated “puppy parking” spots throughout town let dogs chill out for a few minutes while owners pop into nearby retail shops. Two boutiques in the Town of Telluride (Mountain Tails and Alpen Schatz) offer unique necessities and gourmet treats for pets. Alpen Schatz features the original handcrafted leather and brass, or leather and silver, Swiss Dog Collar.

The annual Telluride Fur Ball, taking place each August, is a grand celebration for dogs and their owners. Benefiting the Second Chance Humane Society, the event traditionally features live music, food and dance.

“Pets are part of life, and part of family, in the Telluride area,” says Neil Hastings, director of sales and marketing for Mountain Lodge at Telluride. “Man’s best friend is welcome here.”

Whether it’s a ceremony, honeymoon or rehearsal dinner, Telluride remains at the top of the list when it comes to destination weddings. And the No. 1 lodging site for wedding parties in and around Telluride? Mountain Lodge at Telluride.

The reasons are clear, says Neil Nastings, director of sales and marketing for the resort. “We’ve become the top choice for the value and the variety of accommodations we offer,” he explains. “Whether it’s a single person, large family or group of friends, Mountain Lodge has more lodging variety and amenities to offer than anywhere in the area – for the best value.”

Mountain Lodge at Telluride is an exclusive, slopeside, upscale resort featuring an eclectic blend of rustic elegance and western charm. Upon arrival in Telluride, guests do not need a car. The town of Telluride is 8 blocks long and 12 blocks wide, and offers a free public bus system. A free, energy-efficient, continuously running gondola connects Telluride and neighboring Mountain Village.

Wedding experts Denise and Alan Fields, authors of Bridal Bargains and The Bridal Passport Wedding Plan, name Telluride one of their five top destination wedding locations, and their favorite mountain resort. “With world-class skiing, dining, and other outdoor activities, it’s not hard to understand why,” says Hastings. “Our goal at Mountain Village at Telluride is to make sure that the couples, their friends and their families can take advantage of it all in the best way possible.”

Time to head to the slopes? No matter where you go, when, or for how long, the details can make the difference between a fun-filled, relaxing trip and misery. Mountain Lodge at Telluride, deep in the San Juan Mountains of southwestern Colorado, offers these tips on what to bring – and what not to bring – to make your ski trip memorable and fun.

Mountain Lodge At Telluride Offers ‘Top 10’ List

Don’t Forget to Pack:

Sunscreen, Lip Balm, Sunglasses
Higher altitudes, sunny days, and reflection from the snow can produce severe sunburns, even with temperatures in the 30s and 40s.

Moisturizer
Higher altitudes, especially in the western United States, bring very dry air. Bring along a favorite moisturizer and use it liberally.

Layers
Weather can change in minutes, literally. When you’re out in it all day, be prepared to take layers on and off to stay comfortable and dry. Focus on wicking fabrics and avoid cotton to stay warm.

Water Bottle
When you’re active and at altitude, it’s easy to become dehydrated and not realize it. Fill your bottle with water on your way to the slopes – in the car, train, bus or plane – and keep drinking throughout your trip. Plenty of water also helps to prevent headaches often associated with visits to high altitude.

Toys, Books, And Games
If you’re traveling with the family, be sure to bring something to entertain the kids. Even the most energetic may have some “quiet” time.

Swimsuits
For you and the kids. Most hotels have hot tubs and indoor pools.

A Good Book
Skiers of all ages like to take some time off from skiing and just rest.

Good Walking Shoes
You won’t be in ski boots all the time, and you’ll want to be comfortable walking around town, the hotel, and to restaurants. Ladies, no high heels – they don’t work on snow and ice.

Thin Socks
Skiers often make the mistake of bringing thick socks in the hope of keeping warm feet in those ski boots. Thinner socks made of a wicking material will keep your toes and feet much warmer.

Groceries
Whether you’re driving or flying, try to keep some healthy snacks on hand. Eating small, frequent meals throughout the day can put extra energy into active days, particularly at altitude.

Cast Away
The Telluride region has some of the best trout fishing in the world. Public- or private-water trips range from a half-day to several days. Some combine fly fishing with waterfowl hunting.

Rock Climb
Classes are available for all ages and all abilities, from novice to experienced. Trips with instructors range from half to full days.

Ride ‘Em, Cowboy
Ready to trade ski boots for cowboy boots? Enjoy a horseback ride (from a couple of hours long to multi-day tours) with an incredible view.

Take A Hike
Hike hundreds of miles of trails, with or without a guide, right out your front door. Trails for all levels extend directly from town, and all are pet-friendly.

Ride, Ride, Ride
Both Telluride and neighboring Mountain Village have extensive mountain bike trail systems. Feeling adventurous? The San Juan Hut System, complete with overnight facilities, connects Telluride with Moab, Utah, via 206 miles of varied terrain.

Go Jeeping
Four-wheel-drive tours let visitors experience and learn about the region's scenery. Go on your own, or take a half-day or full-day guided tour.

Get Air
Getting air is the goal for many snow riders in winter, but in summer, you can glide through the air hundreds of feet above the slopes in a glider plane, with only the wind thermals to keep you afloat. Whether you choose paragliding, hot-air ballooning or a sailplane ride, see Telluride from above.

Stay Inside
A day indoors in Telluride can be as active or as relaxing as one would like. See a movie, visit the town’s museum or library, take a historic walking tour of the town, or attend a performance at Telluride’s famed opera house. Relax at one of many extraordinary spas or shop til you drop.

Discover A National Park
An easy day trip from Telluride, Mesa Verde National Park is one of America’s greatest archaeological treasures. Selected by National Geographic Traveler as one of “50 Places to Visit in a Lifetime,” the park also includes the Metate Room, one of Colorado's top 10 restaurants.

Hiking, cycling, horseback riding, fishing, golfing, swimming… If you’re headed to the mountains for a summer getaway, the details in your preparation can help create memories that will last a lifetime. Mountain Lodge Resort in Telluride, Colo., offers these tips on what to bring – and what not to bring – to make those memories good ones.

Colorado Mountain Resort Offers ‘Top 10’ List On What To Pack

Sunscreen, lip balm, sunglasses: Higher altitudes can produce severe sunburns, even with cloud cover and temperatures in the 50s.

Moisturizer: Higher altitudes, especially in the western United States, bring very dry air. Bring along a favorite moisturizer and use it liberally.

Layers: Temperatures can drop 40-50 degrees from day to night at higher elevations. And even during the day, weather can change dramatically in a matter of minutes. Bring a sweater, jacket, and clothes made of wicking materials. Be prepared to take layers on and off to stay comfortable and dry.

Rain jacket: Afternoon thunderstorms are a daily occurrence in many mountain areas.

Water bottle: When you’re active and at altitude, it’s easy to become dehydrated and not know it. Fill your bottle with water on your way to the hills – in the car, train, bus, or plane – and keep drinking throughout your trip. Plenty of water also helps to prevent headaches often associated with visits to high altitude.

Toys, books, and games: If you’re traveling with the family, be sure to bring something to entertain the kids. Don’t forget books for the adults. Even the most energetic may have some “quiet” time.

Swimsuits: For you and the kids. Most hotels have hot tubs and indoor/outdoor pools.

Good walking shoes: You’ll want to be comfortable walking around town, the hotel, and to restaurants. Going hiking? Bring sturdy boots, and make sure to break them in at home to avoid a trip full of blisters.

Thin socks: Hikers often make the mistake of wearing thick socks. Thinner socks made of a wicking material will keep your toes and feet dry and comfortable.

Groceries: Whether you’re driving or flying, try to keep some healthy snacks on hand. Eating small, frequent meals throughout the day can put extra energy into active days, especially at altitude.

“Preparation can make a good vacation great, or turn disappointment into fun,” says Neil Hastings, director of sales and marketing for Mountain Lodge at Telluride. As a premier lodging property, the resort welcomes guests from throughout the United States and many foreign countries each year. “It’s difficult to know what to expect from altitude, drier air, and the climate if you don’t live here year-round,” he says, “so we encourage visitors to prepare in order to get the most out of their vacations.”

Summer vacations are on the horizon. Mom and Dad found a great deal at an upscale resort and are excited to relax in a little luxury. But with kids in tow, is it possible?

Mountain Lodge At Telluride Exec Offers 7 Suggestions To Ease Stress, Up Fun

Yes, says Neil Hastings, director of sales and marketing at Colorado’s Mountain Lodge at Telluride. “Taking the kids to an upscale resort can make for a great vacation – with a bit of planning and preparation.” He offers these suggestions for taking the kids to a resort where the entire family can enjoy the vacation.

Try “mid-week (Sunday-Thursday)” Beyond lower rates, this time can offer fewer crowds and less-stressful time for parents. For instance, at many mountain resorts, early summer and fall shoulder seasons are gorgeous, and offer the same activities as in mid-summer.

Consider smaller, independent properties. These resorts may offer better rates, more space, and greater convenience.

Think outside the standard hotel room. Today, most people know that bed and breakfast inns, and rentals of condos, townhomes and houses offer good lodging alternatives. Also check what hotels and resorts are offering. Many offer more than traditional rooms, with suites, condos and cabins or houses with full kitchens and other amenities. The savings and convenience – especially if you’re able to prepare some meals there – can be substantial while you still reap the comforts and service of a hotel.

Get inside information. Once reserved for wealthy and demanding guests, concierge services are open to every hotel guest. “A good concierge has his or her finger on the pulse of the community,” explains Steve Treacy, concierge at Mountain Lodge at Telluride. “They will have access to one of the most crucial parts of any vacation: inside information.” To make the most of the trip with the kids, a call to the resort’s concierge in advance of arrival can help plan out activities and an agenda for the stay. Some resorts today now even have virtual concierge services where guests can log on and specify their interests and requests before arrival. 5. Pack carefully. Most upscale resorts won’t require dress codes, but thinking – and packing – in layers is a good idea wherever the vacation location. Temperatures can drop 40-50 degrees from day to night at mountain resorts, and even during the day, weather can change dramatically in a matter of minutes, no matter what the location. To keep kids and adults comfortable (and happy), bring a sweater, jacket, and clothes made of wicking materials.

Bring toys, books and games – for kids and adults. Along with entertainment for the kids, bring something for the adults. Kids will tire all day in a new locale, so if they can take an afternoon nap, they’ll be happier and parents will gain some time to themselves.

Stick with good walking shoes. While there may be occasions to dress up when staying at an upscale resort, remember that most of the vacation will involve walking around town, the resort, and to and from local restaurants, shops and activities…with kids. Comfortable shoes for everyone will go a long way in ensuring a stress-free vacation.

Mountain Lodge At Telluride Resort Outlines Top 10 Things To Do

What to do when you’re ready to mix it up? Mountain Lodge at Telluride, an exclusive, upscale resort located slopeside to the famed Telluride Ski Resort, has compiled a list of the top 10 things to do in the area to help winter vacationers make the most of their time.

Ski/Snowboard
Telluride’s world-famous slopes offer ski experiences for all levels. From refined groomed runs to challenging moguls, a mix of terrain at all points on the mountain means that even beginners can ride to the highest peaks and enjoy runs and views typically reserved for the experts.
Telluride Ski Resort is comprised of 2,000+ acres, with 127 trails, a vertical drop of 4,425 feet, runs of up to 4.6 miles in length, and 17 lifts (including 2 high-speed gondolas). Average annual snowfall is more than 300 inches. The resort’s ski school offers lessons for the most novice to the most advanced skier or snowboarder, and its NASTAR course ranks participants nationally, providing an opportunity to win gold, silver, and bronze.

Heliski
In Telluride, you’ll find Colorado’s only helicopter skiing. The ultimate thrill for intermediate and advanced skiers and snowboarders, heli-skiing takes skiers and snowboarders to untracked powder in small custom groups on some of the highest helicopter-accessed terrain in the world. Telluride Helitrax offers the lowest guest-to-guide ratio in North America.

Go Nordic
Located at the top of Lift 10, the TopAten Snowshoe and Nordic Area offers 10 kilometers of groomed, rolling trails that lead cross-country skiers and snowshoers through high alpine forests and open meadows. Daily educational snowshoe tours with a local naturalist and private tours are available. Advanced skiers and snowshoers can continue outside the boundary of the ski area to nearby Alta Lakes on National Forest trails.

Take A Sleigh Ride
Snowcat-drawn sleighs whisk visitors to Gorrono Ranch for a western-style buffet and a drink on the deck around the fire.

Snowmobile
Cruising across white-blanketed meadows and forests, over mountain passes and through deserted ghost towns, snowmobilers get a first-hand look at all that established Telluride's rich mining history. After exploring old mining sites, snowmobilers can enjoy a catered lunch at the Alta Lakes Observatory, a quaint log and stone cabin nestled in the woods.

Ice Climb
Nearby Ouray is home to the world-famous Ouray Ice Park and some of the finest backcountry multi-pitch ice climbing terrain in the lower 48 states. Guided introductory and advanced ice climbing tours, either half-day or full-day, are available. 7. Go fish – Winter fly-fishing in Telluride is one of the best-kept secrets in Colorado. Guides, quality public water, and exclusive private water alternatives make for excellent winter fishing on the Uncompahgre and San Miguel Rivers.

Practice Your Hamel Camel
Skaters waltz by day and night on rinks in Telluride Town Park and Mountain Village. In Telluride, the Town provides a warming hut with a fireplace, while the Mountain Village pond plays seasonal music under the stars. Best yet, both rinks are free.

Go Woof
With a dozen dashing sled dogs in the lead, guests can experience a true Alaskan adventure in Telluride. Half-day, full-day and overnight sled dog trips are available.
