Imogene Pass/Tomboy Ghost Town
Imogene Pass climbs Tomboy Road from downtown Telluride to a summit of over 13,100 feet. Telluride Outside's half day trip to Imogene via Tomboy Ghost Town is the single most popular tour, generally available from late June through September.
½ day trips 8:00am - noon & 1:30pm - 5:30pm
Ophir Pass & the Ghost Town of Alta
Ophir Pass is well-suited to less experienced off-road travelers and those who seek the beauty of the high country in combination with a shorter 4-WD driving experience. This adventure usually also visits Alta Ghost Town, a 4-mile excursion up a nearby 4-WD (easy) to the famous Alta townsite. Alta is one of the best-preserved ghost towns in Colorado and the site of a classic post card photo opportunity: Wilson Peak as viewed from Alta.
½ day trips 8:00am - noon & 1:30pm - 5:30pm
Black Bear Pass
One of Colorado's most notorious off-road passes. Black Bear is recommended for thrill seekers and experienced 4-WD travelers. This tour is primarily done as a half day morning trip to avoid exposure to rain storms on slow-driving sections above the tree line.
Total tour time is approximately 4 hours. Black Bear is generally open from mid-July through mid-September.
½ day morning trips 8:00am - noon
Sunset 4-WD Tour
Enjoy the magnificent San Juan Mountains on a Telluride Outside sunset 4-WD tour. Potential destinations for evening trips include Alta Ghost Town, Tomboy Mine, Bridal Veil Falls and Last Dollar Road. All catch the spectacular light of sunset and each offers fascinating highlights in mining history and alpine scenery.  Telluride Outside sunset tours are ideal for those who are spellbound by an alpenglow in the high country and also for families who seek a 4-WD tour of somewhat shorter than the standard half day tours.
Meeting time: 5:30pm -6:00 pm (varying seasonally)

FAQs

  • What are some popular terrains for 4-WD tours?

Riders will experience a variety of mountain terrain with tours that emphasize scenery and mining history. From 100-year-old mining roads and steep alpine summits to box canyon switchbacks, these routes were made for fun off-road exploration in the San Juan Mountains. And, unlike typical desert country tours, Telluride Outside's 4-WD excursions don't focus on arduous "rock crawling" or difficult technical maneuvering.
  • What vehicles do they use for the tour?

Telluride Outside is the only tour operator in the area that runs new model vehicles instead of converted SUVs, older model Jeeps or 30-year-old European military vehicles. Instead, their tours are offered in newer model Chevy trucks that are customized for safety, comfort and excellent sight lines. Their open cabs allow easy conversation between riders and guides. Removable canopies and clear plastic windows provide an open air experience or welcome shelter during inclement weather conditions.
